#What do you mean by R2 Certification?
R2
Certification, generally referred as responsible recycling certification, is
company level certification that is fully reliant on R2 standards and based on
it. There have been establishment of certain requirements by R2 practices that an
organization need to meet for the handling
of electronic waste in a responsible manner.
#What are the topics under R2 practices?
Various topics have been covered under R2 practices. The
topics are addressing and properly managing the environmental as well as OH and
S issues by the use of an EHS management system, appropriate selection as well
as management of downstream vendors, bringing in generally-accepted data
destruction practices in use, safe storage practice, a security program which
will be well functioning, and demonstration of financially related responsibilities.
One of the must needed requirement in R2 practices being the recycler having to
acquire certification from an Accredited Certification Body.
#How is it determined if the requirements set in R2 practices
have been met by an organization or not?
R2 certification has a certain purpose and this is it.
Section 1.(b) of R2 practices has stated that : The
certificate shall be acquired by R2 electronics recycler from an Accredited
Certification Body, and also has mentioned that
- EHSMS conforms to provision’s requirements
- The practices are conformed to EHSMS as well as to the
R2 practices requirements.
At present, is an organization which can accredit Certification
Body, known by Registrar as well is ANSI-ASQ National Accreditation
Board(ANAB). The certification bodies listed below have been accredited by ANAB
for R2 certification:
- NSF International Strategic Registrations
- Perry Johnson Registrars
- Orion Registrar
- SGS Systems and Services Certification
- SAI Global
- TUV SUD America
R2 Certification can be provided by ANAB-recognized
certification bodies only. Any unaccredited certifications or sef-claims of
system conformity are not permitted at all.
#How can an organization claim for acquirance of R2 Certification?
A copy of the certificate that has been issued by its
registrar must be obtained by an organization for confirmation of their claim
of R2 Certification. Important information listed under the certificate are:
- Certification body(a.k.a. CB or registrar)’s name who
is responsible body for issuing the certification
- Date of issue and Date of expiry of the certificate
- Certificate’s scope
In order to verify the
information, the certification body can be contacted and sometimes can be
checked via website as well.
The list of R2 certified
organizations have been maintained by R2 solutions on its website. But the list
can be incomplete has been stated by the disclaimer. And the list includes name,
city and state of each facility only. However the information regarding
certificate’s scope hasn’t been provided. So verification of certification
directly via R2 certification body seems to be the best.
#Why does there come
importance of the scope statement?
Partial certifications
are only acquired by organizations sometimes. The scope statement that is set
out on certificate explains more dentally of what are actually included in the
audits’ scope that is conducted by the registrar. The facility’s address is included
as well. Since the facility is certified and not that the recycle, it is
important.
#Has R2 Certification
been recognized?
Yes, R2 Certification
has been recognized by U.S. Government, which includes both U.S. EPA as well as
US. General Services Administration.
Likewise, for Executive
Order 13514 purposes, Federal leadership in environmental, energy, economic
performance, it is not necessary for a federal agency or facility to perform
additional due diligence, if the recycle it is planning to use is R2
certified.
Also
it is being increasingly common of inclusion of a certification requirement for
contracts with recycles. As per an industry survey conducted in 2011 by IDC
that stands for International Data Corporation, that was conducted on behalf of
ISRI, 48.6% i.e. almost half of recycles, gave a response that the customers
are being required certification. Equal recognition has been given to both R2
and e-Stewards certification in many but not all cases.
