What do you mean by ISO 50001?
ISO 50001, also commonly known as Energy management system-
Requirements with guidance for use, is one of those international standards set
up by ISO. ISO, is abbreviated form for The International Organization for
Standardization. Various necessities have been specified so that energy
management system maybe established, implemented, maintained and improved. The
common aim of it being making organizations capable of approaching systematically
to the betterment in energy performance. Energy performances include
utilization of energy, security of energy, efficiency of energy and
consumption.
The standard has been developed with an intention to provide
needed help to organizations to minimize their energy use, thus in turn
decrease in their energy expenditures as well as emission of greenhouse gases.
ISO released ISO 50001 as a standard in June 2011. Irrelevant of size,
sector or geographical location, ISO 50001 is suitable for any category of
organization. In August, 2018, ISO 50001 released its second edition as ISO
50001: 2018.
ISO 50001, has been modelled looking at ISO 9001, Quality
Management System and ISO 14001, Environmental Management System. The newly
released version has included clauses modular to both these ISO standards.
ISO 50001 has significant feature of requirement to improve energy
management system as well as the energy performance coming as outcome. However,
ISO 9001 and ISO 14001, that have been mentioned here, have the necessity of improvement
to management system’s effectiveness, but not to products/services’ quality (
In case of ISO 9001) and environmental performance for ISO 14001. It has always
been believed that implementing ISO 9001 and IS0 14001, together, both quality
and environmental performance of the organization will be bettered however this
is not specified at present by these standards, as requirement.
Organizations need
to present demonstration of improvement in their energy performance. ISO 5001
has raised the level set. Quantitative targets haven’t been specified.
Organization chooses, and then makes action plans accordingly to achieve the
target, on its own. Also, this will help in uplifting the financial status of
the organization, with this kind of structured approach.
What are the reasons for using ISO 50001?
ISO 50001 came in as a standard
with the motive of improvement of energy-related performance as well as
efficiency of energy in a continuous manner and also identification of chances
for reducing energy consumption. Organizations will get the help for
establishing systems and processes, through this systematic approach.
When energy management remains consistent, organizations get to
know about the efficiency potential of untapped energy. Since their
expenditures are reduced, they can then contribute good sum of money for the
protection of environment and climate. For instance: They could permanently
minimize the emission of CO2 gases. It is responsibility of the
standard not only to aware its employees but also alert management level about
immediate and long-term energy management benefits. Organizations will not only
improve their financial status, but it will be a major boost to their image in
the market.
Explain about ISO 50001 structure
Looking after ISO 9001, also known as Quality Management System,
and ISO 14001, also known as Environmental Management System, ISO 50001
structure has been designed. All these 3 standards are based upon PDCA cycle, and
they share common high level structure. Therefore, integration of ISO 50001
onto these systems, is easy.
The ten major components to ISO 50001:2018 are mentioned below:
