What decision has FSSAI taken?
FSSAI,
food regulator, has decided to ban the blending of mustard oil and other
cooking oil. It is expected to be brought into practice from October 1st.
A letter that stated prohibition of blending of mustard oil and other edible cooking
oil, to be brought onto practice immediately, effective from 1st
October, 2020, was presented by FSSAI to Food Safety and Union Territories’
commissioner.
What have oil manufacturers been ordered for?
The
edible oil manufacturers or processors, who are licensed for producing blended
vegetable oil, edible in nature, along with mustard oil, have been ordered to
carry sales of their already existent mustard oil/mustard oil stocks and any
other edible oil, as unblended cooking oils. Also, the license holders have
been requested to modify their FSSAI licences.
What do FSSAI regulations state?
According
to FSSAI regulations, two edible oils are allowed to be blended, given the proportion
by weight of vegetable oil, edible in nature, that have been utilized for
blending process, is not less than 20%. Government of India after due
deliberations have asked FSSAI for prohibition of mustard oil blending and also
for the facilitation of manufacturing as well as sales of mustard oil, pure in
nature, for the local market and domestic consumption purpose. The regulator
stated about this.
According
to FSSAI, draft regulation is in progress regarding this matter and the rules
are expected to be finalized shortly, taking into consideration the inputs of
the stakeholders. The implementation of these regulations have been scheduled
to be from 1st of October, 2020 as government has instructed. Blended
edible vegetable oil using mustard oil as an ingredient have been prohibited
for manufacturing, effective from this date on, according to FSSAI.
